Covered California Q & A: Are Spouses Eligible for Premium Subsidies?

Q: Same question as the previous one but I’m married and my wife doesn’t work.  I’m on my employer’s plan, but I can’t afford to add her to the plan.  Can she get a subsidy?

A: Ask your employer if they will drop spousal coverage (they will have to do it for all employees).  If they do, your spouse becomes subsidy eligible because she does not have access to affordable coverage.  If not, your wife may be exempt from the individual mandate if the cost of adding her to the plan exceeds 8% of your household income.  Confusing, I know.  Find out how much the cost is to add her to the plan and call us, we’ll be happy to help.
