happy young family have fun on beachHealth Marketplace Open Enrollment 2016 will begin in just a few short weeks but you can Renew your plan now! Getting ready to enroll or renew requires some important information and knowing what you need for your health marketplace application helps streamline your enrollment.

Health Marketplace Application Checklist:

  • Information about Household- who needs coverage
  • Home address or mailing address for everyone applying for coverage
  • Information about everyone applying for coverage
  • Social security numbers
  • Document information for legal immigrants
  • Information on how you file your taxes
  • Employer and income information for every member of your household- for example W2 or pay stubs
  • Best estimate of what income will be for 2016
  • Policy numbers for any current policy plans
  • Completed Employer coverage tool
  • Notices from your current plan provider that you have or had coverage in 2015

Renewal Information:

If you don’t update your application or change plans by December 15, 2015, some plans automatically renew for 2016 so you’ll stay covered starting January 1. The price and details for many plans often change every year, so it’s a good idea to call and shop the 2016 plans and decide if your current plan will be the one you would like to have. You can use automatic renewal and re-enroll but it’s also a good idea to update your application with any  income and household changes you expect for 2016 so your premium tax credit (if you have one) will be accurate. If you don’t update your information you may have to:

  • Pay a higher premium each month than you need to.
  • Have to pay back any advance payment of the premium tax credit you take but don’t qualify for based on your actual 2016 income at the end of the year. You’ll make this payment when you file your federal income taxes.
  • Wind up with coverage you may not want or are not qualified for.

The letter you get from your health insurance company will say if you’ll be automatically enrolled. They’ll also tell you your 2016 premium, applying a premium tax credit that’s based on your most current information. In many cases, your 2015 plan will be available in 2016 and you’ll be automatically re-enrolled in it. If that same plan isn’t available, you’ll probably be automatically enrolled in a similar plan. In some cases, you won’t be automatically re-enrolled, so it’s a good time of the year to reassess your health insurance needs and find out if there is better plan for you.
